Muslim Sisterhood Society Expands Voter Outreach in Brentwood
By MediaFx
Muslim Sisterhood Society (MSS) has expanded its voter registration efforts in Brentwood, Tennessee, after shifting from an apolitical focus to active civic engagement. Founded by Salma Ali in 2023 during her time at Middle Tennessee State University, MSS initially centered on community bonding through potlucks and trivia nights. Now, with 176 active members and nearly 300 Instagram followers, the group has partnered with TIRRC Votes to host events encouraging voter participation.
In early October, MSS organized a postcard-writing party at Taichi Bubble Tea in Brentwood, where attendees encouraged neighbors to vote in the upcoming midterms. Ali, who initially avoided politics due to distrust in the system, changed her stance after canvassing with a friend. She emphasized the importance of voting as a form of empowerment, noting rising fears among her Somali community about the impact of their vote.
Ali and the TIRRC team have knocked on 75,000 doors, engaging with Black and brown neighbors to understand their priorities. She believes creating spaces for dialogue and coalition-building is essential for sustained civic engagement. Teen volunteers and social media posts of 'I Voted' stickers show growing community involvement.
Meanwhile, RaCarol Woodard, a TIRRC Votes volunteer, highlighted the broader stakes of this election, urging residents to recognize the value of their vote. With just a week left, she stressed the importance of showing up for the community, both at the polls and beyond, to ensure ongoing support and advocacy.
